Colonel Richardson Middle School Physical Education
Syllabus
The goal of the Physical Education department of Colonel Richardson Middle School is to help students to improve their overall fitness, learn and develop new skills that can be utilized in a variety of sports and activities, and encourage students to work with diverse groups of people in a variety of settings. We are also hoping to guide students to become more independent learners and take a greater responsibility for their own fitness and health. In order to achieve this, students are REQUIRED to change and participate in all class activities.
During class times, we have students participate in fitness activities, including distance runs, Fitnessgram pacer, push-ups, curl-ups, sections of workouts from P90X, Insanity, and workouts using a Tabata Timer. Students learn and practice various sports skills with individual practice time, group practice activities, and application of skills in games.
The CRMS PE department also looks to improve students’ cognitive abilities and social responsibility. This is achieved through students answering journal questions pertaining to effort, achieving goals, and various aspects of physical activity. Students will complete personal and social responsibility journals, in which they grade their own performance during class time. Quizzes based on sports skills and concepts will also be given to determine student understanding of these skills and concepts.
Throughout the year, students will be keeping fitness portfolios in which they track their own progress in distance runs, the pacer, push-ups and curl-ups. Students will also be asked to reflect on how to improve these components of fitness. Goal setting is also a skill students will be working on within this portfolio.
Some of the grades students receive for physical education are based on their OWN improvement. The Fitnessgram assessment is a tool used throughout the state of Maryland to determine fitness levels. The overall goal is for students to be in the healthy fitness zone. Our grading is based on the improvement of these fitness components, with the ultimate goal of students reaching the Healthy Fitness Zone. For more information on Fitnessgram, go to: http://www.fitnessgram.net/faqs/parents-faqenglish. Students will also be grading themselves based on participation, cooperation, and following rules and directions. Teacher based grades will accompany the student based grades.
If you have any questions regarding the CRMS Physical Education program, please contact your student’s teacher, who will be more than willing to clarify any information regarding grading, assessments, or anything concerning your child’s participation in Physical Education.
